UPDATE:

Police can now confirm the identity of the deceased in the fatal collision which took place on Wednesday morning, 8 March, West Bay Road. He is 38-year-old Abele Hiwet, an Italian national residing in Cayman.

The RCIPS expresses condolences to the family of the deceased.

8 March 2023:

Shortly before 1:00AM today, 8 March, officers responded to a report of a fatal collision on West Bay Road in the vicinity of the Queen’s Court Plaza, involving a Jeep Cherokee and an electric bicycle. The Jeep and bicycle collided and the driver of the Jeep continued to drive from the scene. The Jeep was later found parked further north along West Bay Road, with the driver having left the scene.

Emergency services attended the location and the cyclist was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital via ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Officers later located driver of the Jeep, a man, age 36 of West Bay. He was breath-tested with a positive result and subsequently arrested. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
