Police can now confirm the identity of the victim in the fatal collision which took place on Saturday, 18 October, on West Bay Road. He is 78-year-old Michael Edward Boonstra, a visitor from the United States.
The RCIPS expresses condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Initial Release (19 October):
Just after 9:10 PM on Saturday 18 October, police and other emergency service were dispatched by the 9-1-1 communication Centre to a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, which occurred on West Bay Road, George Town.
It appears that a man, who is believed to be a visitor to the island, was attempting to cross the road on West Bay Road, in the vicinity of Piper Way, when he was struck by and oncoming vehicle.
The man was assisted by an off duty senior police officer until the arrival of the Emergency Medical Services. He was then transported to the hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased by the attending doctor.
The female driver of the vehicle thst was involved in the collision appeared to have been experiencing a medical emergency following the collision, and was also transported to the hospital for treatment.
As a result of the fatal collision, the roadway has been closed to facilitate the on scene investigation. Motorists are being diverted to Lawrence Boulevard and Eastern Avenue. Local access is being granted where necessary.
