Following further investigations, the Police can confirm that the text messages circulating regarding “dormant accounts” are legitimate communications sent by the financial institution to its members.
The RCIPS had initially issued a public advisory after reports were received concerning the messages and a link included in the text. Following a review by the institution it has been confirmed that the messages are authentic.
The Police thanks the public for their vigilance and cooperation.
Members of the public are reminded to continue exercising caution when sharing personal or banking information online and to ensure they are interacting with official websites and verified communication channels.
Initial Release:
Police are aware of fraudulent text messages circulating that claim to be from a local financial institution. The message states that the recipient’s account is “dormant” and encourages them to click a link to reactivate the account.
The link leads to a fake website that is being used to collect the sensitive banking information of unsuspecting persons.
In similar scams, persons have entered their personal banking information on fake websites, allowing criminals access to their accounts.
