The Police are advising the public of a new wave of the ongoing Google Meet call scams involving suspects contacting the public and claiming to be members of local law enforcement, requesting personal and financial details, as well as a new wave of the Post Office Parcel SMS Scam.
In the latest tactic of the Google Meet scam, the suspects are contacting members of the public via audio-only call, purporting to be representatives from local financial institutions, and requesting banking details.
The Post Office Parcel SMS scam continues to involve text messages purporting to be from the Cayman Islands Postal Service, alerting the user of an outstanding parcel, and instructing recipients to click on a fraudulent link to pay for delivery fees. Clicking on the link can result in your financial information being compromised.
These scams remain active, with different institutions being impersonated via text messages and calls. Varying domain addresses are being included in the text messages.
The RCIPS is reminding members of the public to ignore these messages and contact their financial institutions directly to verify the legitimacy of any communication received by phone or online which involves requests for personal or financial information.
Anyone who believes they may have mistakenly clicked on a link in a similar text message, or provided personal details via phone call, is advised to contact their financial institution immediately and report the matter to the police at 949-4222.
