RCIPS FCU Warns of Lottery Scam Being Circulated Via Physical Mail, 20 June

20th June, 2018 Police Headlines

The RCIPS Financial Crime Unit is advising the public of a scam which is being distributed by regular mail. The FCU has received several reports of local persons receiving a letter purporting to be from the “Euro Lotto Commission” informing them they have won the lottery and asking them to provide bank details and other information.

The FCU is reminding the public to be highly suspicious of any such letters, and not to provide any information in response.

“Although currently it may seem that most scams are carried out electronically, this doesn’t mean that physical mail should automatically be trusted,” said Detective Sergeant John Williams of the FCU. “The public should be sure to exercise caution with any suspicious communication, even letters received via physical mail.”
