The RCIPS Financial Crime Unit is advising the public of a scam that is being circulated through Facebook Messenger and possibly other social media. Victims have received messages claiming they have won prizes (including cash and cell phones) in a mobile lottery conducted by the Coca Cola Company. The messages further claim that this lottery has been approved and legalized in Cayman by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, and include an approval purported to be signed by Commissioner of Police, Mr. Derek Byrne. The message requests the recipient to send banking and other personal information in order to claim their prizes.
The RCIPS would like to make clear that this message is a scam. No such lottery promotion exists nor has any such promotion has been approved by the RCIPS or Commissioner Byrne. Anyone receiving any such message is advised not to respond, but instead forward the message to the RCIPS FCU at RCIPS.FCU@gov.ky. The FCU can also be contacted via phone at 949-8797.
The public is reminded to be extremely suspicious of any solicitations for financial details or other personal information made via Facebook or any other social media.
