RCIPS Investigates Thefts of Items from Beaches, Three Arrests Made, Two Charged, 20 July

20th July, 2018 Police Headlines

Over the past two weeks, officers have responded to a number of reports of thefts from beaches, where persons have gone into the water and left belongings on the shore, which are then stolen. Most of these thefts have occurred in the Seven Mile Beach area, including Public Beach, Governor’s Beach, and Cemetery Beach. There was also one such theft reported at Smith Cove last week.

In two cases on Thursday, 12 July, arrests were made. One in which a man and woman were seen looking into several bags on the beach near the Westin and subsequently arrested, and in another case where a man was seen attempting to place someone else’s bag into the one he was carrying, and subsequently arrested. The man and woman in the first case (who are age  18 of George Town and age 19 of East End)  have both been charged with Criminal Trespass and Attempted Theft, and appeared in court yesterday, 19 July.

The most recent case occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 17 July, where two persons at Governor’s Beach had personal items and some cash stolen from a bag they had left on the shore while swimming.

The RCIPS is strongly advising the public not to leave valuables unattended while on the beach.

  • Try to have at least one person stay onshore with belongings when swimming;
  • If alone, consider purchasing a waterproof pouch in which you can places your keys and wallet, and take in the water;
  • Leave valuables locked in your vehicle whenever possible (out of sight).
