Beat 5 - Spotts Newlands

Beat 5 - Spotts Newlands

Originally from St. Vincent and the Grenadines where he served as a police officer for 7 years, PC Reynold Matthews has been with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service for the past 12 years and has a total of 19 years policing experience.

PC Matthews believes that policing is not only enforcing the laws of the land, but also an opportunity to change lives. He knows from his policing career that offering a word of encouragement or a listening ear can make a difference in the life of those in the community he serves. He wants to be that listening ear for his beat.

By doing so, PC Matthews’ aim is to develop a relationship with the community’s residents, local organizations and leaders. He believes that strong relationships like these can address issues before they get out of hand. Like all community police officers, PC Matthews sees himself as a liaison between the community and other police and government departments, businesses and organizations, to help address issues that may or may not be strictly related to policing. So far he has identified the following main issues of concern in his beat:

 1. Burglaries - The prevention of burglaries in his beat as well as providing victim care and advice to residents who've been victims of burglaries;

2. Anti-social behaviour – The changing of idle and disruptive behaviour into productive activity, through initiatives with youth;

3. Traffic Offenders – Addressing concerns about speeding and dangerous driving in a residential beat.

PC Matthews intends to work to resolve these concerns, and create and maintain comfortable and safe living conditions within Beat 5. He will work side by side with the community to attain these goals.
