Update (29 June):
Simon Julio Newball, age 44 of George Town, who was arrested on Thursday, 25 June, has now been formally charged with Threats to Kill, Possession of a Controlled Drug, Consumption of a Controlled Drug, 3 counts of Assaulting Police, 2 counts of Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, and 3 counts of Causing Fear or Provocation of Violence.
He is appearing in court this morning, 29 June.
Initial Release (25 June):
Just before 4:25PM today 25 June, police located and arrested wanted man Simon Julio Newball in the Eastern Avenue area of George Town.
After being located, Newball resisted arrest, deployed pepper spray and assaulted an officer at the location. The officer was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment for what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Newball is currently in police custody pending further investigations.
The RCIPS would like to remind the public that wanted man Simon Julio Newball remains outstanding, and are seeking the assistance of the public to locate him. The public is encouraged to call 9-1-1 immediately if he is seen, and they are advised not to approach him. He is believed to be armed and dangerous.
The police would also like to remind the public that it is against the law to obstruct a police officer in the execution of his duties. In doing so you may be liable to a penalty of a fine of $3000 and imprisonment for 4 years.
Newball was involved in an incident on 27 May where he assaulted the police and brandished restricted weapons. He is wanted on suspicion of possession of a restricted weapon, threats to kill and other offenses relating to this and other incidents. For more information see press release below.
Officers have been actively searching for Newball since the incident occurred on 27 May. Police operations were carried out today, 25 June, in the West Bay and George Town Districts, however, he was not located.
Detectives continue to encourage Mr. Newball to attend the Cayman Islands Detention Centre or any active police station across the island to surrender to custody.
Update: Incident in George Town, 28 May
As a matter of public safety, police is confirming that the man who was involved in the below incident is 43-year-old Simon Julio Newball of a Walkers Road address in George Town. Mr. Newball is approximately 5 feet 6 inches in height, slim build and of light brown complexion. He is believed to be armed and dangerous, and should not be approached by members of the public.
Detectives are seeking the assistance of the public in locating the wanted man on suspicion of Threats to Kill, Possession of a Restricted Weapon, and other offenses relating to the below incident. If seen the public is encouraged to call 9-1-1 immediately.
Earlier this afternoon, Wednesday, 27 May, officers were responding to a report at an address off Walkers Road, when a man at the location obstructed them in their duties. The man brandished a machete and pepper spray, then assaulted officers with the pepper spray. He then fled the location.
The affected officers have undergone decontamination, and efforts are currently underway to locate and apprehend the man.
