UPDATE: Men Charged for Importation of Illegal Drugs, 19 August

UPDATE (19 August):

The four men who were arrested following the interception of a vessel suspected of illicit activity on Thursday, 14 August, have now been formally charged.

 

Three of the men, ages 39, 45, and 64 of Jamaica, have been charged with Illegal Trafficking of Ganja, Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, and Conspiracy to Import Ganja.

 

The fourth man, age 38 of West Bay, has also been charged with the above offenses, as well as three counts each of Illegal Landing and Human Smuggling.

 

The men appeared in court yesterday, 18 August, and were remanded in custody, pending a further appearance on Wednesday, 20 August.

 

 


Initial Release (15 August):

The Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) can confirm that, at about 2:40AM yesterday, 14 August, while on patrol, the CICG, supported by the RCIPS Air Operations Unit, intercepted a vessel, with 4 persons onboard in our territorial waters, engaging in what appeared to be illicit maritime activity.

The occupants of the vessel were detained on suspicion of committing the following offenses:

 

•           Illegal Entry into the Cayman Islands,

•           Possession of Controlled Drugs, and

•           Importation of Controlled Drugs.

 

The vessel, its contraband and the persons found onboard have since been handed over to the RCIPS for further investigation.

The items recovered were subsequently found to contain over 1500lbs of suspected ganja.
