Road Safety Tips, 15 January

The RCIPS would like to remind the public that all road users have a responsibility in ensuring that our roads are safe, not only for themselves but also others.

Cyclists are being asked to ensure that their bicycles have adequate light and reflective materials so that they are visible at nights. Bicycles should also ride along with the traffic and not against the traffic. Additionally, cyclists and all others utilizing motorized devices are reminded that pedestrians have the right of way on sidewalks and walking paths.

Pedestrians are being reminded that when using crosswalks and pedestrian crossings they should ensure that they stop and wait for approaching vehicles to stop before crossing the road. Some vehicles may not always be able to stop depending on the distance that they are from the pedestrian crossing so you must wait until its safe.

Drivers are being reminded that distracted driving is one of the leading causes of minor collisions on the islands. Driving while using a mobile phone is an offense which carries a penalty of $150 and this offense will be strictly enforced. Please ensure that you are giving 100% of your attention to driving when in control of a vehicle.
